Sargent was selected to represent New South Wales playing from the bench in game III of the 1990 State of Origin series.[1]

From 1990 to 1992, Sargent was selected for the Kangaroos on four occasions, playing against Great Britain, France and Papua New Guinea.[2] He was the Knight's first international representative.

In 1989, Sargent won the Rothman's Medal for 'best and fairest' player of the year, along with Gavin Miller from the Cronulla Sharks.
