[edit] Career
Rooney began his senior career at Dublin City before joining UCD in 2003 where he broke into the Student's first team[1]. Rooney only stayed at Belfield Park for one season before joining his former manager at UCD, Paul Doolin at Drogheda United in 2004[2]. Mark became a regular member of the Drogs' squad and delivered many impressive performances. Rooney lost form and confidence during the 2005 season for Drogheda only scoring one league goal in 22 appearances. Despite a difficult season for him personally, Mark was part of the Drogheda United squad that won the 2005 FAI Cup after beating Cork City in the final on December 4, 2005 at Lansdowne Road[3]. Mark was released by United during the close season and he joined Dublin City for the 2006 season. Dublin City went out of existence in July 2006 leaving Mark as a free agent[4]. He would soon later join St. Patrick's Athletic for the remainder of the 2006 season[5]. After struggling to become a regular in the Pat's squad for the 2007 season, Rooney departed the Inchicore side in July 2007 in search of regular first team football. Mark signed for Shelbourne during the July transfer window in order to boost Shels' attacking options[6]. Rooney made his Shelbourne debut on July 6, 2007 in a 1-0 win over Wexford Youths at Tolka Park[7] and he scored his first Shels goal during a 4-1 victory over Athlone Town at Lissywoollen on October 12, 2007[8]. Rooney made 17 appearances for Shelbourne and scored 2 goals in the process during the 2007 Season. Rooney was released by Shelbourne at the end of the 2007 season[9].
