Mark O'Donnell is a Tony Award-winning American writer and humorist.
O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan shared the 2002 Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical for their work on Hairspray. They were also the writers of the 2007 film. The pair has also worked on another John Waters musical adaptation, of Cry-Baby, currently in rehearsals.
His novels include Getting over Homer and Let Nothing You Dismay.
He is the identical twin of television writer Steve O'Donnell.
He received his B.A. from Harvard College in 1976. He was a member of the Harvard Lampoon, where he held the position of Ibis. He was the writer and librettist for three Hasty Pudding musicals for the Hasty Pudding Theatricals group, a feat that is still unprecedented.
He introduced the joke, "Knock Knock. Who's there? Dwayne. Dwayne who? Help help, Plug the dwayne, I'm dwowning!"
