Mark "Barney" Greenway (born July 13, 1969 in Kettering) is a British grindcore vocalist, who has been a member of Napalm Death, Extreme Noise Terror and Benediction. He is best known for his 'deep' death grunt and his lively stage act. His vocal inspiration comes from Kam Lee, of the band Mantas, which later became Death. He is also known as being a supporter for PETA and has been a vegetarian since he was 14. He has also expressed anti-conservative and anti-fascist views and is a strong supporter of democracy.
While out of Napalm Death, during 1998, Greenway started a band called Nothing But Comtempt with Cancer's drummer Carl Stokes. After Stokes left Nothing But Contempt, Danny Herrera became the band's drummer. Nevertheless, Greenway returned to Napalm Death and Nothing But Contempt was put on hold.
Greenway has stated his nickname "Barney" came from a time when he used to drink alcohol. He stated he would get so drunk and if he went anywhere, he would bump into everything. From this behaviour, he would be called "Rubble", which changed to "Barney Rubble" and then just "Barney". [1]
Greenway often vocalises Napalm Death's left-wing convictions onstage during their live sets. For example, during their set at Download 2007, he was heard to tell the crowd (to the accompaniment of raucous cheers), "God does not exist. [Religion] is nothing but a load of unproven, unsubstantiated nonsense. It causes nothing but problems."
Greenway is a big progressive metal fan. He joined Dream Theater on stage at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club and performed vocals on Metallica's "Damage, Inc." live. He is a regular contributor of the British rock magazine Kerrang! as a reviewer of prog metal bands/albums.
Greenway is also a fan of Aston Villa F.C.
