Thomas Mark Bishop (born 29 June 1954), has been an Australian Labor Party member of the Australian Senate since July 1996, representing the state of Western Australia. He was born in Adelaide, South Australia, and was educated at the University of Adelaide and Harvard University. He was an industrial officer and union secretary before entering politics.
Bishop has been a member of the Opposition Shadow Ministry 1998-04. He was Shadow Minister for Veterans' Affairs 2001-04, Shadow Minister for Customs 2003-04, and again Shadow Minister for Veterans' Affairs 2004-05. In June 2005 he was appointed Shadow Minister for Defence Industry, Procurement and Personnel.
On December 10, 2006, Bishop announced his retirement from politics, stating that he would not recontest his Senate seat when his term expires in 2008. However, his planned retirement proved to be short lived. On January 31, 2007, Bishop declared a change of mind and will seek another Senate term. [1]
Senator Bishop met with Brian Burke after the party's national secretariat banned contact with the disgraced former Premier in November 2006. Although the contact was claimed to be of a personal nature, Bishop was counselled by ALP leadership in March 2007. [2]
