Marissa is a village in St. Clair County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,141 at the 2000 census.

Marissa is located at 38°14′46″N, 89°45′10″W (38.246011, -89.752899).[1]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 3.9 square miles (10.1 km²), of which, 3.7 square miles (9.6 km²) of it is land and 0.2 square miles (0.5 km²) of it (5.12%) is water.

Marissa was founded in the region to the southeast of St. Louis, Missouri known as only Athens precinct until 1846, when James Wilson gave the name Marissa to the first post office in what would become the Village of Marissa in 1867. The name 'Marissa' was chosen because of Wilson's affinity for the biblical town of Mareshah, Israel (now extinct), which he gained from reading "Antiquities of the Jews" by Falavius Josephus.

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 2,141 people, 879 households, and 595 families residing in the village. The population density was 576.1 people per square mile (222.2/km²). There were 992 housing units at an average density of 266.9/sq mi (103.0/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 98.97% White, 0.28% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.05% from other races, and 0.37% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.75% of the population.

There were 879 households out of which 29.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.6% were married couples living together, 11.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.3% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 2.96.

In the village the population was spread out with 24.8% under the age of 18, 10.4% from 18 to 24, 24.8% from 25 to 44, 23.9% from 45 to 64, and 16.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 94.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.0 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $31,684, and the median income for a family was $41,898. Males had a median income of $31,654 versus $23,024 for females. The per capita income for the village was $15,930. About 4.2% of families and 9.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 13.2% of those under age 18 and 9.9% of those age 65 or over.


Marissa has two schools. Marissa Jr. Sr. High school, and Marissa Grade School.
