Maris the Chojo (ザ・超女 Za·Sūpāgyaru?), literally translated as "The Supergirl" is a one shot manga story by Rumiko Takahashi. It ran in the October 1980 special edition of Shōnen Sunday and was later made into an anime OVA.
In North America, it was released on VHS and laserdisc by Central Park Media under the "Rumik World" series (which also included OVAs Laughing Target, Fire Tripper, and Mermaid Forest). It was originally released under the title "Supergal", but this was changed for allegedly legal reasons.
[edit] Summary
Maris is a down-on-her-luck Space Policewoman/Bounty Hunter deeply in debt. Why? Maris is a Thanatosian, and Thanatosians have six times the strength of a normal human being. So to keep the destruction her race does to a minimum, Thanatosians are made to wear harnesses that limit their strength. But Maris always seems to destroy one thing or another when she's on patrol, and, she's obliged to pay for her destructions, in effect bankrupting her. Thus when she hears that an intergalactic quadrillionaire has been kidnapped, she figures that he'll be so indebted to her that he might ask for her hand in her marriage. What she doesn't know is that his kidnapper is super-strong as well. In fact, before she became a policewoman, she was a professional wrestler who defeated a rival, Zombie Sue in a wrestling match. And now her rival is seeking some payback. Determined to win this time around, Suee places a special device on Maris' restraints, causing it to intensify its effect over Maris. Inside the wrestling ring, Maris, with her strength heavily inaccessible, was left at the complete mercy of Sue, who headbutted her to kikingdom come, and repeatedly slammed her cure head to one of the posts. * Note: Maris' obsession with money is demonstrated by her hair ornaments, in the shape of the symbol for "Yen". ( Japanese money )
