Marion Junior/Senior High School is a high school in Marion, Wisconsin, which teaches grades 7-12.

The school includes standard high school curriculum plus specialized classes devoted to career development including auto tech and computer programming. It has an average overall enrollment of approximately 300 students. The school colors are blue and gold and the mascot is a mustang. However, at one time, the mascot was the fighting pigeon.

While the city of Marion is located in Waupaca County, the school district is on the border of Shawano and Waupaca counties, bringing students in from both counties, including local communities Caroline, Leopolis, and Pella. At one time, Caroline had its own elementary school, with the mascot, the Caroline Cougars. However, this school had very few students and was sold to the local American Legion group, when students began attending Marion's elementary school in the early 80s.

Marion has had several different high school and elementary buildings in the past. However, the main building has usually been on the, appropriately named, "School Street" in downtown Marion. Both elementary and high schools were at one time in the same building. A fire in 1985 caused HS classes to be moved to the Elementary School, while elementary classes were moved to various locations around Marion (in churches and other areas), while a new high school, connected to the old gymnasium, was built on School Street. The separate elementary building for K-6 is located five blocks north of the JH/HS, just of off Main Street. A fieldhouse addition was made to the Elementary School in 1998, where many events are now held.

[edit] Programs

Marion High School has a very successful history with such programs as music, FFA, FCCLA (formerly FHA), forensics and academic groups. Every year, MHS has students that represent the school at state and national levels in FFA, as well as state competition participants in music and forensics.

[edit] Athletics

Marion High School participates in the Central Wisconsin Conference - small division, or CWC-Small, in the following sports: (fall sports) cross country, cheerleading, football, volleyball; (winter sports) basketball and cheerleading for both boys and girls; (spring sports) baseball, softball, golf and track. Local churches and groups also sponsor summer baseball and softball teams and tournaments.

[edit] Wrestling

Marion High School has had very successful athletes in recent history. While MHS discontinued its wrestling program because of declining participation, the school boasted its first state champion, Sam Buckett, in 1997. MHS also had state finalists including Casey Beyersdorf, who placed 3rd and 4th, respectively, and Justin Gilling, who was a state finalist.

[edit] Track and Field

Marion High School also has had several state champions in recent history. Pole vaulter Gordon Zietlow, after placing second in 1994, he set the school record of 15'6" in 1995, taking first at state. Zietlow still ranks sixth among all-time Wisconsin High School pole vaulters [1]. His younger brother, Wes, also went to state later, taking second in 1999 [2]. Shane Suehring competed in the 3200m run at state in 1996. Sam Buckett was a pole vault state finalist in 1998. Jeremiah Malueg, who was second at state in 1999, took first at state in 2000 in discus. That same year, Justin VanAllen also went to state in long jump.[3]

[edit] Cross Country

The cross country program was discontinued for many years because of declining involvement, however, experienced a resurgence in the late 90s. This was followed by the boys team going to state and finishing seventh in 1997, with top runner John Natzke placing seventh individually. The next year, Adam Christian also was an individual qualifier for state.

[edit] Softball

Under head coach Deb Malueg, who also serves as elementary school principal, the softball team has qualified and won state many years. However, the last time the team won state was in the early 90s. Since then, the team has had many individual all-conference players, but has not returned a team to state competition.

[edit] Baseball

Legendary coach John Bartelt led the baseball team to many victories and state competitions until his retirement in the early 90s. Since then, the team has also had many all-conference players, but has not returned to state competition.

[edit] Golf

With the building of Marion's first community golf course, Perry's Landing nearly the turn of the millennium, the students requested and received a new golf team. So far, there have been no state qualifiers. However, Rusty Mehlberg was an all-conference golfer in 2003.

[edit] Basketball

Basketball has had moderate success over the years. Most notably, the girl's basketball team nearly dethroned conference powerhouse Iola (which eventually went to state that year) at home in the regional playoffs opener in 2000. Unfortunately, after Marion led most of the game, Iola came back to win, as Marion's last second three pointer was instead made a two pointer on a second chance shot, following an Iola block.Seymour 29-2 over Marion in a youth game.

[edit] Football

Marion, at one time, had no varsity victories from 2000, when the team won the season finale at home versus Menominee, until 2007. However, MHS came out and won four games during the 2007 season, ending the seven-year victory drought.
