Marion is a city in Crittenden County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 8,901 at the 2000 census. The city is the county seat of Crittenden County,[1] and is part of the Memphis metropolitan area.

Both Union Pacific Railroad and BNSF Railway operate major intermodal freight terminals near Marion.

Marion is located at 35°12′22″N, 90°12′6″W (35.206092, -90.201734).[2]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 13.4 square miles (34.8 km²), all of it land.

As of the census[3] of 2000, there were 8,901 people, 3,254 households, and 2,508 families residing in the city. The population density was 663.3 people per square mile (256.1/km²). There were 3,365 housing units at an average density of 250.7/sq mi (96.8/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 83.96% White, 14.13% Black or African American, 0.26% Native American, 0.60% Asian, 0.49% from other races, and 0.56% from two or more races. 1.44% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 3,254 households out of which 45.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.3% were married couples living together, 13.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.9% were non-families. 19.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 3.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.70 and the average family size was 3.11.

In the city the population was spread out with 30.1% under the age of 18, 9.1% from 18 to 24, 36.4% from 25 to 44, 19.3% from 45 to 64, and 5.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 31 years. For every 100 females there were 96.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $44,084, and the median income for a family was $50,853. Males had a median income of $38,187 versus $26,947 for females. The per capita income for the city was $19,074. About 6.3% of families and 8.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.1% of those under age 18 and 2.7% of those age 65 or over.
