The MMPV is a locally produced Philippine version of the AM General HMMWV (300 already operated by the Philippines Armed Forces) with a Mitsubishi diesel engine (Pajero) engine and transmission, four wheel drive and chassis. The cost is much less than the US built Hummers - 310 thousand Philippine pesos (PHP) bare. Additional military equipment and modifications required by the Marines are estimated to cost another 25 to 35 thousand PHP. First priority is to replace the M-151 recoilless rifles jeeps, the Marines eventually want to procure several variants - troop carriers, ambulance, communication vans, Military Police jeep and command vehicles.
