Marija Obrenović

Marija Obrenović or Elena Marija Catargiu-Obrenović (born Elena Maria Catargiu; Serbian Cyrillic: Елена Марија Катарџи-Обреновић; 1831June 28, 1879 or July 16, 1876) was a Moldavian-born Serbian and Romanian boyaress. A member of the Catargiu family, she was the wife of Prince Milosh Obrenović (1829-1861) and the mother of Milan Obrenović who rose to the Serbian throne in 1868. Her husband was the nephew of Miloš Obrenović I, Prince of Serbia the founder of the House of Obrenović,

Later in life, she was the mistress of Alexander John Cuza, Domnitor of the Principality of Romania. Marija Obrenović had two sons by Cuza: Alexandru Al. Ioan Cuza and Dimitrie Cuza. The two were raised by Cuza's wife, Elena Rosetti Cuza, as her own children.
