Marie Alberta Massey was a fictional character in the television series Alice. A relatively minor character, she was played by actress Victoria Carroll.
[edit] Marie and Mel
Marie Alberta Massey is mostly known as being the much long-suffering and put-upon girlfriend of diner owner, Mel Sharples. She worked at the local bar, the Chez Chug-a-lug. Alternately they would love one another, and other times, they would get into screaming tantrums with one another. Mel called her "puppy toes" and "snookie tookie", among other names. She would call him Curly or when she was angered with him, "Barrel Bottom".
Although Marie, more than anything, loved Mel, she could get really angry when even a hint of someone was looking at him. She even worked at Mel's Diner, for a time, after Florence Jean Castleberry left and Belle Dupree came to work. During that time, he really drove her crazy, because she not only worked at Mel's but also at the Chez Chug-a-lug. Mel tried to propose to her, in the means of not paying her; Marie took this to mean that she was getting the shaft, and broke up with him in fury. They eventually made up.
She was friendly with Alice Hyatt and Vera Louise Gorman-Novak during the time she worked at Mel's. Although, rarely seen after that, Marie was mentioned frequently, and made appearances up to the eighth season.
