Maricopa Association of Governments
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Maricopa Association of Governments (abbreviated MAG) is an association of governments that represents the bulk of the metropolitan area of Phoenix, Arizona. It was formed as a result of the guidelines of the 1973 Federal Transportation Act.[1] The Maricopa Association of Governments is composed of the government of Maricopa County, all municipalities and Indian reservations in the county and the Citizens Transportation Oversight Committee.[2] MAG is both the Metropolitan Planning Organization and the Council of Governments for the Maricopa County region.

[edit] Purpose
MAG is responsible for developing policy in the areas of regional development and transportation, air and water quality, and human services.[3] The council was formed in the spirit of cooperation amongst the differing levels of government.
[edit] Regional Council
For cities and towns, the Mayor serves as the representative member of the regional council. For the Indian Reservations, the Tribal Governor or President serves as the representative. The Chair of the Board of Supervisors for Maricopa County generally serves as the regional council representative member for Maricopa County. The Chair of the Citizens Transportation Oversight Committee and Arizona Department of Transportation are represented on the council as well.
The Executive Committee of the council is elected by the other council members on an annual basis, and are required to include a Chair, Vice Chair and Treasurer of the Regional Council. The Executive Committee was expanded in 2002 to include seven members, allowing for additional participation by the other member agencies.[4]
