Atilio is the owner of the mine, he is a powerful man of strong character which comes to cruelty when someone goes against his will. But he hides a dark secret that he keeps: Mariana is not his daughter and what he feels for her is far away from being paternal love.
Atilio has two sisters: Isabel and Marcia. Isabel, the oldest, is kind and good hearted, she loves Mariana and has raised her up as if she were her daughter. Marcia, the youngest, is arrogant and vain, dresses up in a masculine way, hard on the miners, and with a cold heart that has never known what love is, that is, until a young and handsome man named Ignacio Lugo comes to the town. He is a journalist who comes to the town in search for his roots under a false name.
Once he gets to know Mariana, Ignacio knows that he will never be able to love another woman, and Mariana surrenders in to him, love and her soul. But Marcia falls in love passionately with Ignacio, and she is full of jealousy when she finds out Ignacio and Mariana got married in secret. Full of fury, Marcia tells her brother about the marriage, and Atilio is determined to kill Ignacio without knowing that he is sentencing to death his own son, the product of the love he had with Lucrecia, the owner of the village restaurant.
But the destiny saves Ignacio's life when Atilio is hurt due to an accident at the mine. Mariana finds out Atilio is not her father and she is more horrified to know that Atilio is in love with her. Desperate and thinking she is really cursed, Mariana flees from the village, taking inside her womb Ignacio's son. Marcia takes advantage of the situation to marry a man she doesn't love and get pregnant, but after an abortion, she uses her wits to seduce Ignacio and steal Mariana's son, whom she passes as hers to make Ignacio marry her.

[edit] Profiles
Mariana (Alejandra Barros)- She is a young and sensible woman, although she is sometimes reserved to herself. She has a strong character and, in some occasions, she rebels against her father, although she respects him and adores him. She dreams with falling in love, although the fact that all of her suitors have died makes her believe she is cursed, the reason of why she dresses up in black, in sorrow and in mourning for the love she could never find.
Ignacio (Jorge Salinas)- Although he seems aggressive due to his rude and musculous appearance, Ignacio is an intellectual, a journalist, and a writer with various books published, and he loves to write poetry. He comes to the village under a false identity in order to find answers as to his origin and the death of all of his family.
Atilio (Cesar Evora)- A fierce, possessive, and dominant man who does not have morals when it comes to obtaining what he wants. He loved Mariana's mother with passion, and since she is also the image of her mother, he falls in love with her. He keeps his love a secret because Mariana thinks she is his daughter, but he doesn't tolerate the fact that other men approach her, and he is...and has been...able to kill to prevent it.
Marcia (Angelica Rivera)- Atilio's youngest sister. Like him, she is very cruel and dominant. She is mean to the employees of the family and the miners and she always dresses up in a masculine way. She has never fallen in love because she thinks she is superior to all of the men around her, but when Ignacio arrives, she gets all passionate and jealous when she finds out he is in love with Mariana. She is able of doing anything just to make Ignacio all hers.
