Maria Beatty is an internationally acclaimed filmmaker born in Caracas, Venezuela from New York City New York and currently based in Paris, who has been directing, acting and producing films for the past seventeen years. She is renowned for her exploration into the depths of female sexuality, fantasy and fetish setting new standards in erotic cinema. Her vision is inspired by expressionist German cinema, French surrealism and American film noir, thus her work reflects her knowledge and affinity for those genres.
Boy in a Bathtub, shot in New York in High Definition, is her first foray into feature length. Beatty collaborated and co-wrote "Boy in a Bathtub" with French writer Claire Menichi, who has written several feature film scripts and related to the thematics of sexuality and the metamorphosis of the body.
Her past work is indicative of the diversity of Beatty's creative work and dedication to her craft: In 1989, she produced and directed her first film entitled "Gang of Souls" a documentary exploring the insights and influence of the Beat poets. Some of the artists featured in this film include- William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, Gregory Corso, Jim Carroll, Marianne Faithfull, Anne Waldman, Ed Sanders, Diane Di Prima, Richard Hell, Lydia Lunch and Henry Rollins.
Soon after, in 1991, she directed her second documentary entitled, "Sphinxes Without Secrets" that presents some of the most engaging work produced by women performance artists: Diamanda Galas, Carolee Schneemann, Rachel Rosenthal, Holly Hughes, Robbie McCauley, Annie Sprinkle and others.
From 1994 on, she became renowned for her short films which explore the depths of female sexuality and fantasy, setting new standards in erotic cinema. Her unique vision is inspired by such underground sexually subversive gay filmmakers as Kenneth Anger and Jean Genet. Her sophisticated style commands the viewer with an enveloping aesthetic that unsettles even as it captivates. She has collaborated with John Zorn who composed the soundtrack for three of her films The Black Glove, The Elegant Spanking, and A Lot of Fun for the Evil One.
Beatty is currently in production, 2007, on her second feature film which will focus on lesbian thematics with a strong narrative structure unifying sexual fantasies and deep psychology; hauntingly disturbing and beautiful. She will also be unveiling on DVD and VOD four brand new fetish/sm films, Autumn 2007.
