Maria Avedici Santoya is a fictional character that appeared in the first movie of The Omen series. She is the biological mother of Damien Thorn, the Antichrist.
She is never seen in person in the 1976 or 2006 movie, but she is seen as a ghost in the 2006 remake. She gave birth to Damien in an ordinary hospital in Italy, on June 6th, 1976 (2006 in the remake). She died in childbirth at the same moment that the Thorn's real son was murdered. This was so Damien would be adopted by Robert Thorn to spare his unknowing wife, Katherine.
Father Brennan witnessed Damien's birth, and when he was trying to warn Robert, he told him he saw the mother's true form (thought Robert thought he was referring to his wife).
After her death, she was buried in Chervet. The Thorn's real child was buried next to her, posing as her real son, who died the same night she did. Her tomb was discovered by Keith Jennings and Robert Thorn when they went to Italy to find Damien's real mother. When they opened the tomb, they discovered the corpse of a canine-like creature, proving she was indeed a Jackal.
