Margaret Furse

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Margaret Watts (1911–1974) was an English costume designer.

Born to the well known Punch magazine illustrator Arthur G. Watts and Phyllis Watts in 1911, costume designer Margaret Furse married art director Roger Furse and became involved in the world of the theatre - specialising in costume design - beginning at the end of World War II.

Furse's connection to Sir Laurence Olivier undoubtedly opened many doors. Nominated for a number of Academy Awards she was awarded Best Costume Design for Anne of the Thousand Days in 1969 and was nominated five additional times.

She and Furse eventually divorced and she remarried author Stephen Watts (though maintaining the Furse last name professionally) with whom she remained until her death from breast cancer in 1974.

A portrait of her, painted by her husband Roger, hangs as part of the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery in London.
