Marcus Textor

Marcus Textor (Born 12 March 1946) is a Swiss chemist, material scientist and an ad hominem professor of biologically oriented surface science and biomaterials at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich[1] and the director of The Competence Centre for Materials Science and Technology (CCMX).[2] He is a world expert on biomaterials and metalorganic complexes.
During early 70s, Textor worked on the synthesis and spectroscopic characterization of metalorganic complexes as well as interpretation of UV/VIS spectra in the fame work of molecular orbital calculations and ligand-field theory. As a Fellow of the Royal Society, he contibued his research activities on the preparation of metal single crystals, their characterization using LEED, XPS and UPS and the monitoring of catalytic model reactions at these surfaces.
In 1978 he joined Alusuisse Central R&D Laboratories (now Alcan), Neuhausen am Rheinfall, Switzerland[3] and started as a team leader in the area of surface analytical research and services (XPS, SIMS). He later became responsible for the development of new surface technologies (anodic oxidation, electrodeposition, CVD/PVD), before being appointed head of the Materials Department with worldwide responsibilities for materials aspects related to the fabrication and application of aluminium and composites for the industrial (automotive) and packaging sector.
A major focus of Marcus Textor and his group is currently on self-organization of multifunctional molecules and polymers, micro and nanoparticles, and lipid-based platforms, with exploitation in the fields of biomimetic surfaces, 2D biochemical patterning, 3D micro/nanostructuring, and functional nanoparticles. Among his innovations is the design, synthesis and application of PLL-g-PEG as an anti-fouling polymer. His lab was also instrumental in the development of several biosensors such as Optical Waveguide Lightmode Spectroscopy (OWLS).
He is a member of the editor board of several journals including Biomaterials, co-editor of the book Titanium in Medicine and a member of the Executive Committee of the AVS Biomaterials Interface Division.
