Marcus Valerius Mesalla Corvinus, the main protagonist in David Wishart's series of detective novels set in Imperial Rome, is thinly based on a real historical character, but as the author admits, considerable liberties have been taken. Of senatorial rank (i.e. upper class), Marcus Corvinus spurns the conventional career path followed by his contemporaries and develops a taste for investigating politically sensitive matters, thereby enabling the author to: a) introduce many historical figures, warts and all; and b) continue Marcus Corvinus's adventures around the Roman Empire. The books are well written and the plots not at all straightforward.
