Marcus Clark was an Australian department store chain, founded by Henry Marcus Clark.

[edit] History

Marcus Clark built up a retailing empire from Sydney, New South Wales, which continued until the 1960s. The 'Marcus Clark' department stores were located in the Sydney CBD at Central Square, now known as Railway Square. In the 1800s and early 1900s, Central Square was the heart of the city's modern retail district, enhanced by the presence of Central railway station and its adjacent hotels, erected to serve country visitors arriving in Sydney by train. [1]

The Marcus Clark department store headquarters were located in the suburb of Newtown, in a building that Clark constructed known as 'The Hub'. The Hub later became a prominent theatre in Newtown. Clark's real name was Henry Marcus Clark but he preferred using the name Marcus Clark and one may imagine there was some intentional confusion between Clark and the famous Australian author, Marcus Clarke (unrelated).

With the changes in the retail scene in Australia in the 1960s Waltons Limited bought out Marcus Clark & Co., followed by other department stores such as Anthony Hordern & Sons and McDowell's.

Marcus Clark had a chain of stores operating in country New South Sales at:

  • Armidale
  • Canberra
  • Dubbo
  • Forbes
  • Goulburn
  • Gunnadah
  • Inverell
  • Lismore
