Marcus Atilius Regulus (disambiguation)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
At least three men named Marcus Atilius Regulus, all related to each other, became consuls of Rome in the third century BC.
- Marcus Atilius Regulus (consul 294 BC), was the first man from the gens Atilia to become consul of Rome.
- Marcus Atilius Regulus, son of the above, was the ill-fated consul whose overconfidence led him into defeat and captivity in Carthage. His name was used in several ways in Roman history, as a warning against future expeditions into Africa (then meaning Carthage and its surrounding provinces), and as an ideal of Roman bravery and virtue. Other versions of his name are Regulus, or Attilio Regulo (the Italian variant)
- Marcus Atilius Regulus (consul 227 BC), apparently elder surviving son of the captured consul and grandson of the first Marcus Atilius, was consul in 227 BC and consul suffect in 217 BC. He was an elderly man in 216 BC, when he was excused from going further with the Roman armies marching to intercept Hannibal at Cannae.
