Marcelo grew up in Rio de Janeiro is a black belt and started training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 1991, at Gracie Barra with Carlos Gracie, Jr.( he is the son of Carlos Gracie, the original founder of the fighting style now known world-wide as Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu). Marcelo began his path to the black belt among the best, as Gracie Barra is home to Brazil's greatest BJJ fighters and inumerous times world champion team.

Marcelo went on to win the Pan American Championship and completed his university degree in business administration. He then went on a three-month trip to Australia to improve his English, during which he met experts in other martial arts and was invited to teach in Blue Mountains.

Marcelo decided to stay in Sydney in an effort to make BJJ as big in Australia as in Brazil and set up the Gracie Barra Sydney School with the support of his master, Carlos Gracie Jr.

Since arriving in Australia, Prof. Marcelo Rezende has been working hard. He fought the first black belt match in Australia and New Zealand. He has also opened numerous affiliated branches in both countries given seminars and has developed new arrest procedures for the NSW police. He has also taught grappling techniques to rugby teams like the ROOSTERS and Brumbies.

Marcelo is also the founder and director of the NSW Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation and coach for many champions in Jiu Jitsu, Submission Wrestling and Mixed Martial Arts with International standard. One of his students is the famous fighter Mark Hunt, the K1 Kickboxing Grand Prix Champion now fighting in Mixed Martial Arts with Pride FC in Japan with victories over super stars such as Wanderlei Silva and Mirko Filipović giving him the position of the Top 5 Heavyweight MMA fighter in the world.

Marcelo has opened the first Brazilian Jiu Jitsu course for overseas students, called the Australian Institute of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Now with his new project is giving the opportunity to the overseas to come to Australia and train full time in BJJ doing a professional course. The AIBJJ is affiliated to Australian Academy of Sport and Fitness who is taking care of the students.
