[edit] Introduction and history

Marcellin College is a secondary boys’ school run since 1950 by the Marist Brothers. Originally established in Camberwell, Marcellin expanded to Bulleen in 1963, with the Camberwell campus catering for years 7 and 8, and Bulleen covering years 9 to 12 (Matriculation, VCE). The Camberwell campus closed in 1993. In the late 1960s, Marcellin flirted with a co-educational campus, when year 12 students from Our Lady of Mercy College in Heidelberg attended the Marcellin campus for some subjects. This attempt was not deemed successful. Recently, the bond between Marcellin and OLMC strengthened through their school musical production, held in 2006. Marcellin has also had close ties with Our Lady of Sion College working together on Biannual Musical productions during the 90s and early 00s as well as sharing Food Technology and Visual communication and design facilities.

The College was founded upon the principles of Saint Marcellin Champagnat to provide an education grounded in Gospel values with emphasis upon each student striving to reach his potential. Indeed, the College's Latin motto: virtute ad altissima means literally "to the highest with virtue" or “Through virtue and courage to strive for the highest”.

The College philosophy promotes 'open entry' in terms of academic ability, encouraging students of all abilities to undertake their studies there. This is continued into the VCE where the large majority of students are encouraged to complete their Year 12. The mainstream curriculum is augmented by extension programmes for the gifted and additional support for those with learning difficulties.

The College's facilities include specialist classrooms, learning technologies, performance venues and sporting venues. The 15 hectare property includes the playing fields used in the Associated Grammar Schools’ of Victoria competition, various Old Collegians' Sporting Clubs and also a few of the AFL Football Teams. Prior to the 2006 Commonwealth Games, the Fijian and Welsh rugby teams also used the Gartner Fields as an official training venue. The Jonathon Bray oval is also situated on school grounds, and is considered by many to be one of the finest ovals in Melbourne, commercial or otherwise.

The LOTEs offered at Marcellin include Italian, Chinese and Indonesian.

Marcellin, like its fellow Marist college Assumption College in Kilmore, regional Victoria, has produced a large number of AFL footballers.

Marcellin College is a member of the Associated Grammar Schools of Victoria.

[edit] Houses

The Eight Houses with their associated Co-Ordinators and colours are:

  • Augustine, David Brick (Maroon)
  • Champagnat, Nick Moloney (White)
  • Faulkner, Michael Callanan (Gold)
  • Kenny, Alfio Camarda (Red)
  • Lavalla, Rhiannon McGee (Blue)
  • Mannes, Mary Bourke (Gray)
  • Marlhes, Joshua Di Pietro (Green)
  • Redden, Bruno Panetta (Pale Yellow)

The Houses compete in 2 main carnivals annually:

  • Swimming
  • Athletics

Occasionally throughout the year, students of different year levels of each house compete against each other in numerous year-level/House competitions. These include Theatre Sports, Indoor Soccer and Thunder Hockey, which continue until a winner of that event is decided in a final. Students also compete in the national sharemarket game, hosted by the ASX.

[edit] Pastoral Care

Marcellin uses a system of Pastoral care. In 1991, the College instituted a 'Vertical System' of homerooms, where each student enters - and leaves - the College under the guidance of a single House and, as the system allows, a single Patoral Leader for his 6-year term at the College. While this may not always occur (ie: the Pastoral Leader may leave before he/she completes a 6-year term as Pastoral Leader for that student), what is of most benefit is the rapport which is established.

In principle, the Pastoral Leader:

  • Establishes a rapport with both the students in his/her care, as well as with the students' parents.
  • Monitors and responds to students' needs during their time at the College.
  • Maintains a 'link' between the parent(s) and College to address any matters of family/parental concern to/from the student's teachers.

The system also helps to develop relationships with boys in other year levels, allowing students to make new friends and get settled in more easily.

[edit] LOTE

A study of a Language Other Than English is an integral element of an education at Marcellin. Students must undertake a (minimum) 2-year study in Italian, Chinese, or Indonesian upon entering the College. After the 2-year study it may be continued, in consultation with the student's teacher/student/student's parent(s).

If students continue with their studies in either of these LOTEs they are invited to a study trip to either of Italy, China or Indonesia depending on their language by their year 9 or 10.
