Marc Hempel is an American cartoonist/comics artist best known for his work on The Sandman with Neil Gaiman.

Marc Hempel was born on May 25, 1957 in Chicago, Illinois. He studied at Maine Township High School East, winning the Departmental Art Award as well as a national Hallmark Award, after completing his degree in 1975.[1] He moved on to Northern Illinois University, anc concurrently began working professionally in comics c1978, his illustrative work appearing in "Gasm, Video Action, Fantastic Films, Questar, and Marvel's Epic Illustrated."[1] In 1980, he graduated with a B.F.A. in Painting.
Having already worked with him previously, Hempel joined Mark Wheatley's Insight Studios in Baltimore, and between 1980 and 1988 the two collaborated on projects including Mars, Blood of the Innocent and Jonny Quest.[1] Hempel also produced work solo for Marvel Fanfare, Alien Encounters, Heavy Metal and some humor magazines during this period, before DC Comics released Wheatley & Hempel's critical and commercial success Breathtaker (1990).[1]
Hempel has also produced comics such as Gregory, Tug & Buster and the anthology series Marc Hempel's Naked Brain. He has recently joined the "usual gang of idiots" at MAD Magazine. Hempel is also a drummer.
