[edit] History

Marble Slab was founded in Houston by chefs Penn and LaPage in 1983. They were inspired by Steve Herrel of now-defunct Herrell’s Ice Cream in Boston, who pioneered the mix-in approach to ice cream toppings.[2] In 1986, Marble Slab became the first ice cream treatery to use a frozen granite slab to blend mix-in toppings into the ice cream.[3] The frozen granite slab concept has since been licensed to other stores, including sister chain, Maggie Moo's. That same year, Marble Slab was bought by Ronnie Hankamer of Texas, who laid the groundwork for the brand's franchising concept.[3]

In the past few years, Marble Slab has quickly expanded beyond its original Southeastern presence and become a fast-growing franchise. It is ranked in Entrepreneur Magazine's Franchise 500 (#93), Fastest-Growing Franchises (#72) and America's Top Global Franchises (#75).[4]

[edit] Products

Marble Slab's ice cream, frozen yogurts, smoothies, waffle cones and brownies are made fresh daily at each store.[5] Gourmet ingredients for ice ceam and mix-ins are often imported from other countries, such as for vanilla from Madagascar and Swedish dipping chocolate.[6]

Customers can select from the Tasty Creations menu of assorted ice cream concoctions, or they can also choose to add mix-ins to any ice cream flavor, which include Ameretto, Maple, Honey, Key Lime, Pina Colada, and White Chococate.

Mix-ins, which include fresh strawberries and blueberries, can also be blended in Marble Slab's line of low-fat, non-fat or sugar-free frozen yogurts.

  • Marble Slab’s non-fat frozen yogurt has 100 calories, less than 0.5 grams of fat, 22 carbohydrates and 17 sugars and three grams of protein.
  • Marble Slab’s no sugar added frozen yogurt has 90 calories, less than 0.5 g, 17 carbohydrates, six sugars and four grams of protein.
