Maravankudieruppu is a part of the Nagercoil Municipality situated 3 km from the Nagercoil, the district capital of Kanyakumari district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is a predominantly Catholic village centered around Our Lady of Snows(The shrine name refers to the basilica of Saint Mary Major on the Esquiline Hill in Rome, where legend says that snow fell in the summertime(From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)). The town/village is bordered on the West by Vattakarai Village,Pattakasalian Vilai and Kalaisirakkum Kudieruppu(Kalasamirakki kudieruppu) to the North, Keela Maravankudieruppu by East and on the South a water canal, which flows from Pechiparai Dam.

There are about 1200 Catholic families in the parish with a population of about 5000. The average lieracy rate is extremely high. There is one school for each in Kindergarten, elementary and high school levels. The main occupations are teaching and timber dealing apart from farming.

[edit] Origin Legend

It is believed that around 250 years ago, Mr. Thirupapu (Title name given by King of Travancore) migrated from Kamanayakkan Patti, a village about 150 km away and settled here. He and his four children are believed to be the ancestors of this village. His tomb is sill preserved in the parish cemetery behind the chapel. On every Easter and Christmas day the parishioners accompanied by bands and trumphets visit the cemetery to honor him by garlanding his tomb following the midnight mass. They also daub the cross on his tomb with coconut oil and milk to honor him. Alternate legend suggests the ancestors to be the merceneries hired by the king of Travancore from Kamanayakkanpatti, during the political upheaval in the samasthanam. Hence the name "maravan" (Soldier) and "Kudieruppu"(colony) came for this village. A epitaph at the chapel attests to the origin of the people as from [Kamanayakkan Patti]].

No week day goes without Fish Curry for lunch and or dinner, it is indeed a nightmare for any person here to be without fish. In fact,at 12:00 Noon, soon after the ringing of church bell, the Fish Market near the cemetery gathers momentum . Angelus bell (Thirikala Mani) here is more like the opening bell of New York Stock Exchange, just a reminder for the house wife to rush to the fish market. May be, some old bed ridden people still recite Angelus Domini nuntiavit Mariæ prayer (ThiriKala Jebam). No Sunday passes without a meat for lunch. Mutton, beef, chicken & Pork are widely used. Drinking in the bar is acceptable, but not inside the house or dining table.

New Year,Christmas,Easter & 10 days Church festival in August are the most celebrated one's in the parish. Community Dining (Asanam) is also an important day, where in all the parishioners,pool in money, cook in the church ground, and enjoy a common meal.
