Marathon City is a village in Marathon County, Wisconsin, United States. It is part of the Wausau, Wisconsin Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 1,640 at the 2000 census. The village was incorporated from a part of the original area of the Town of Marathon.

(44.929882, -89.839524)According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.0 square miles (5.3 km²), of which, 2.0 square miles (5.3 km²) of it is land and 0.49% is water.

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 1,640 people, 632 households, and 448 families residing in the village. The population density was 805.5 people per square mile (310.4/km²). There were 659 housing units at an average density of 323.7/sq mi (124.7/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 98.54% White, 1.16% Asian, 0.06% from other races, and 0.24% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.30% of the population.
There were 632 households out of which 35.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.9% were married couples living together, 6.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.1% were non-families. 25.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the village the population was spread out with 26.5% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 21.9% from 45 to 64, and 13.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 92.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.9 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $44,063, and the median income for a family was $53,036. Males had a median income of $34,180 versus $24,191 for females. The per capita income for the village was $20,480. About 1.1% of families and 2.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 0.2% of those under age 18 and 7.7% of those age 65 or over.
[edit] Marathon City Branch Library
A well-stocked lending library, accessible to everybody, was maintained at the Friendship House prior to the 1950's. The Friendship House was operated by a religious order and was located on County Road NN just to the east of the village.
The Marathon City Library began in 1954 in a space at the Marathon High School. In 1973, the Marathon City Library became a Branch of the Marathon County Public Library when the Wausau Public Library and Marathon County Library merged.
By 1975, the library was relocated to the village hall, and later moved to a storefront location on Main Street. Construction of a new village hall in 1985 included the branch library.
There are different types of events held here, also voting takes place at this area.
