Marathia, Ilia (Greece)

Marathia (Greek: Μαραθιά), is a village that is part of the commune of and the municipality of Amaliada and the prefecture of Ilia. The town is passed by Greece Interstate GR-9/E55. The nearest communities are Savalia and Roviata to the north, Amaliada to the east, and Kourouta to the west. Distance from Amaliada is 4 km WNW, Patras is about 76 km SW and 18 km NW of Pyrgos.

Marathia at one time was large enough to have their own elementary school. Today the school is closed, an overrun by vegetation. Children today are bussed to the nearby town of Amaliada for grades K-12.

Marathia has a church (Koimisi tis Theotokou - Ιερός Ναός Κοιμήσεως της Θεοτόκου) which is located near the center of the village, right on the National Road (Greek highway system).Today (2007) the Priest of the unique church is:"Papa-Giorgos" The area in the southeast and west is covered with forests and agricultural lands. Its beach is located to its west and another in Kourouta. Marathia has a great beach and a Camping. Also there is a cinema called: "Cine Marathia".
