Marathi nationalism

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Marathi nationalism is the political expression of ethnic consciousness of the Marathi people, who inhabit the ethno-linguistic region of Maharashtra in western India. Modern-day Marathi nationalism traces its roots back to the days of Maratha Empire, a confederacy of Maratha chieftains established by Shivaji Bhonsle in mid-17th century. Political parties such as the Shiv Sena, the Nationalist Congress Party and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena as well as pseudo-political outfits like Sambhaji Brigade are regarded as proponents of Marathi nationalism. Issues like Belgaum border dispute and dilution of ethnic Marathi majority in Mumbai (the capital of Maharashtra) due large scale influx of non-Marathi migrants in to the city and its suburbs, are seens as issues central to Marathi nationalism. Hindu nationalism is also a major influence on Marathi nationalist expression.Marathi nationalism , is basically sub-nationalism. Personified by the words, Jai Hind, Jai Maharashtra.
