María Luisa Penne

María Luisa Penne de Castillo (1913- October 2005) born in Ponce, Puerto Rico, was a painter, artist, and educator who taught and influenced the work of well known artists such as Noemi Ruiz and Maria Somoza, Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Puerto Rico.
Dona Maria Luisa attended the Pratt Institute in New York during the 1940s, becoming the first Puerto Rican woman to graduate from the prestigious art and design institute. She continued her studies, obtaining degrees from the Art Institute of Chicago and Columbia University in New York.
Mrs. Castillo or La Teacher, as she was known to her disciples, designed and implemented the art curriculum for the Polytechnic Institute of San Germán (now the Interamerican University – San Germán) and for the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez, where she was head of the department for many years.
Her art work can be seen at the Puerto Rico Museum of Art.
She died in San Juan, Puerto Rico in October 2005.
