[edit] Summary

This picture shows three views of the Mars 96 orbiter. The orbiter is in its cruise configuration with the small stations and penetrators still attached. The small stations are attached on top in the conical shaped structure. The penetrators are attached to the propulsion unit on the bottom of the spacecraft. The propulsion unit would be jettisoned in Mars orbit some time after the penetrators were released.
