Hobbies: Chess, Golf, Baseball, Astronomy, Amateur Radio (Callsign: KC2LYQ), Reading, Hiking, Traveling, Skiing(Alpine and Nordic), Dogs, and Puzzles (Jigsaw, Sudoku, Kakuro, and my favorite one Paint By Numbers, or Hanjie).
I enjoy hiking, especially mountain hiking. I've only hiked and "summited" three of the Catskill High Peaks, but I would like to be able to hike all 35 of them.
I love geography, and know all of the capitals of Europe, and most world capitals. I love to learn the capitals of different countries, and would like to know them all soon. Traveling is also one of my passions. I would like to travel throughout all of Europe, with a specific interest in the Baltic states and all of eastern Europe (Belarus, the Balkans, etc.). The Falkland Islands, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, Germany, Austria, Denmark, Greenland, Svalbard, and Scandinavia are also at the top of my list. I would also like to visit many of the Far-Eastern countries, like the Koreas, China, Taiwan, and The SE Asian countries. The cities I would like to visit most are: Longyearbyen (if you can call it a city), Munich, Stanley, Vilnius, Sofia, and Chişinău. I guess I'd like to visit just about every country in the world :-).
I enjoy languages (learning, using them). Even though I am only at a basic proficiency level in German, I would like to become fluent in it. I would also like to learn Mandarin Chinese, Russian, and many other languages. I find language to be very interesting. I also enjoy reading about (and some day learning) "rare" languages like Welsh.
Another thing I enjoy is listening to music. My favorite genre is Progressive Rock. My favorite artist is Yes. Some of my other favorites are: Rush, Emerson, Lake, and Palmer (ELP), The Who, Pink Floyd, early Utopia, Gentle Giant, Camel, Premiata Forneria Marconi, Gabriel-era Genesis, and Edgar Winter. My favorite album would have to be Close to the Edge by Yes. It is one of the best Progressive Rock albums of all time. I also enjoy the album Todd Rundgren's Utopia. It really is an epic of Progressive Rock, and music in general.
I also enjoy reading. My favorite genre is mystery (whodunit mostly), although I read some adventure and non-fiction. Some of my favorite authors are: Agatha Christie (the Poirot series especially), Clive Cussler (the Dirk Pitt novels), Louis L'Amour, Ellis Peters, Laurien Berenson, Ngaio Marsh, P.D. James, Ruth Rendell, Elizabeth Peters and Dorothy L. Sayers. I've also read most of Jules Verne's works, and have enjoyed them greatly. Some of my favorite magazines are: Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine, CQ Amateur Radio, Sky and Telescope, Dog World, and the AKC Gazette.
I don't particularly love movies, but I do have a few favorites. They are: Silver Streak, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (the older version), Heaven Can Wait, The Magnificent Seven, Duck, You Sucker, and Best In Show. I also like the entire Rocky series, with the first movie being my favorite, as well as the Die Hard series.
On this books topic, I have recently discovered Terry Pratchett's wacky and wonderful Discworld series, and now I am hooked! I have only read The Color of Magic so far, but the others in the series are at the top of my list to read next.
I also play the MMORPG RuneScape, and I use the username Fatalrook. Even though the graphics of this MMORPG are not as good as some of the other MMORPGs, I continue playing because I think that the gameplay is excellent. I tried Warcraft, and I had to go right back to RuneScape. Warcraft was fun, but for some reason I just enjoyed the whole concept of RuneScape more. It is an excellent and very entertaining MMORPG, and I recommend anyone with a few hours (or years) of free time to give it a try. Just a few thoughts!
My favorite shortwave radio station is Radio Taiwan International.
I play the Alto Saxophone, and I would say that I am at an intermediate level of proficiency, receiving a 98/100 on my Level 6 (highest level) NYSSMA (NY State School Music Association) solo.
I am new to Wikipedia, and I would like to learn how to create and edit pages. I would also like to improve my user page. My largest contribution so far has been the update of the Radio Station Belarus article, which I hope to upgrade to at least a B class article in the near future.
I am a Junior at Chaminade High School, which is a private Catholic high school in Mineola, NY. It is really a great place to go to high school, and a great place to grow up and learn about my faith and life in general. I couldn't imagine a better environment.
I am proud to be a Roman Catholic.
I am also proud to be English (25%), German (25%), Italian (25%), Hungarian (12.5%), Irish ( around 5%), Scottish (a tiny bit), and Russian (a tiny bit).
I am studying German in school, and am in my second year. This is how I have obtained my basic level of German proficiency, as shown in my Babel userboxes (I've finally learned how to place them in my profile, thanks to Jade Knight).
I enjoy watching baseball, and my favorite team is the New York Mets, even though the New York Yankees are a close second.
I am a big hockey fan, and I root for the New York Rangers, one of the truly original hockey teams.
My heroes are Saint Thomas More, Saint Boniface, Sir Ernest Shackleton, Sir Edmund Hillary, and Tenzing Norgay.
I will be adopting a Keeshond within the next year. This should be very interesting and enjoyable, and I'm looking forward to owning my own dog. I also plan on participating in Conformation and Agility, maybe even Obedience or Flyball.
My 6 all-time favorite breeds are, the Keeshond, Finnish Lapphund, Samoyed, Cardigan Welsh Corgi, Newfoundland, and the Sheltie, in that order. I have also heard that the Papillon is a great breed of dog.
Some of my other favorite dog breeds are: Bernese Mountain Dog, Kuvasz, Great Pyrenees, American Eskimo Dog, along with all of the German Spitzes, Vizsla, Whippet, Finnish Spitz, all Pointer breeds, all Setter breeds, Brittany, Schipperke, and English Springer Spaniel. I also think I like the Tibetan Mastiff and the Komondor, but I won't be sure until I meet one of each :).
