[edit] School Overview

The school is operated through the Osseo Area School District 279 and is one of four junior high schools operated by District 279. The Osseo School District 279 schools do not follow the modern trend of grades 6-8 for junior high schools, but follows the once traditional grades 7-9.

[edit] Academic Assessment

The school is ranked 39th out of 229 public middle schools in Minnesota. Maple Junior High and Osseo Junior High School (which was ranked 57th out of 229) were the only middle schools in the Osseo School District 279 that were ranked in the top 100 middle schools in the state. Maple Grove Junior High also made AYP for the 2005-2006 school year but did not make it for the 2006-2007 school year. The test scores were above average for the 2005-2006 school year.

[edit] Sport Teams and the Osseo Junior High Rivalry

MGJH is the home of The Mustangs, whose rival is Osseo Junior High School. The junior high rivalry between Maple Grove Junior High and Osseo Junior High reflects that of the senior high rivalry between Maple Grove Senior High School and Osseo Senior High School. Even though there is a strong rivalry between the two junior highs, the student body is split in close to half over which senior high (Osseo or Maple Grove) they will attend. In 2006-2007 Maple Grove Junior had the largest ninth grade class with a population of 600 freshmen. Many students are from other residential areas and school districts such as the Wayzata School District.

Other extracurriculars such as Destination Imagination, Future Problem Solvers (both academic competitions), and music programs are also widely recognized. MGJH's D.I. Program is quite notable in fact, having almost all teams go to state and typically one or two teams representing at the national level. Future Problem Solvers also has done well in recent years. The 2007 season both teams went to state, with one team nicknamed "Stevie and the Pwning N00bs" placing third in the skit portion of the competition. In the 2006 season one team went to nationals. Music Programs are also widely recognized. The Band Program is one of the best in state and is led by Ms. Joni Sutton, a well known percussionist, and Mr. Jonathan Harmer. Both are graduates of the U of M. MGJH also is the only Junior High in the district with a fall musical. Past shows include Guys and Dolls, The King and I, The Wizard of Oz, Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and The Music Man. In fact, MGJH's musicals are often known to surpass the high schools' with the direction of former choir teacher Mrs. Ann Wobig, now retired, with Mr. Richard Drake now conducting.
