[edit] Suggestion: scale by population
I would like to suggest that pretty much all of these maps are replaced by maps that:
- are scaled by population instead of using a geographic map
- are auto-generated by a script that takes in an editable list of countries
- have more specific information made available where that makes sense (large countries, in particular, where regional data is available)
I'm willing to do the work on the first two, if there's consensus, but would like input, particularly on good maps scaled by population that we can build on.
Comments? Maybe someone's already done the work, and it's just about using it? Which maps should not be scaled by population?
I'd also suggest that while the perl script and data used should be available for generating the map automatically, the actual image file itself should remain on Wikipedia (or the commons), just with simple instructions on how to change things in the comment area.
