Mao, Dominican Republic

Mao is a municipality (municipio) and the capital of the Valverde province in the Dominican Republic. Within the municipality there are three municipal districts (distritos municipales): Amina, Guatapanal and Jaibón de Pueblo Nuevo.[1] It is located at around .
As of the 2002 census the municipality had a total population of 74,760 inhabitants, 54,493 living in its urban settlements and 20,267 in its rural districts (Secciones). 49,475 did live in its seat (cabecera literally head), 47,828 in the city of Mao itself and 1,647 in its rural districts. The municipal districts had the following population: Amina 9,396 inhabitants (1,900 living in the town itself and 7,496 in its rural districts), Guatapanal 7,719 inhabitants (1,648 urban and 6,071 rural) and Jaibón de Pueblo 8,170 inhabitants (3,117 urban and 5,053 rural).[2] For comparison with other municipalities and municipal districts see the list of municipalities and municipal districts of the Dominican Republic.
