Richard Hathaway established the Manufacturer's Record of Baltimore in 1882. He had previously worked for the Journal of Commerce of Baltimore, as a clerk, bookeeper and finally as an editor. A few months after the Record was established, Hathaway's brother, William H. Edmonds, became a partner and business manager of the paper, a position he held until his death in 1898.
