Manshuk Mametova

Manshuk Mametova (Mansiya) Zheengaleevna (Kazakh: Мәншүк Жиенғалиқызы Мәметова) was a Kazakh machine gunner of the 21 rifle division of the 3 guardian shock army and the first Soviet Asian woman to receive the Hero of the Soviet Union for acts of bravery (Hero of the Soviet Union (1944)).
Orphaned at very young age, Manshuk Mametova spent her childhood in Almaty, under care of A.Mametova. By the time the WWII begun, she had been studying at Almaty Medical Institute.
She had been taken to war as a volunteer in 1942. Senior soldier and machine gunner Manshuk has shown bravery and courage. She was killed in a battle for Nevel, fighting until her last breath.
Many streets, schools in Nevel, Almaty, Oral and other citis were named after her name. Monuments in her honor may be found in many parts of former Soviet Union.
