Mansfield and Sutton Astronomical Society

Mansfield and Sutton Astronomical Society (MSAS) is an amateur astronomical society in the East Midlands of England. Their home is Sherwood Observatory which lies 3.9 km SW of the centre of Mansfield in the county of Nottinghamshire.

MSAS is a non-profit making registered charity dedicated to furthering interest in astronomy within the community.

The society is primarily funded through member subscriptions, fund raising events and public open evenings held at the society's Observatory on Coxmoor Road, Sutton-in-Ashfield, although charitable donations to their present name. from local industry, and several grants have also been gratefully received and invested in the Observatory premises and equipment.

The main aims of the society are:

•To further the interests of Astronomy and related subjects within the local community. •To introduce interested members of the general public to the subject of Astronomy. •To provide a forum for education in Astronomy and observational techniques through a joint collaboration with the University of Nottingham. •To provide members with the best observational equipment possible, subject to the financial limitations of the society.

The society holds monthly members-only lecture meetings at the Observatory, along with a number of other observing and training evenings for members.

Members also run a night school for members of the public who wish to learn more about astronomy and the Universe in general. These are usually held at the observatory on Friday evenings.

The open evenings for spring 2008 will be held on the following dates:

         Saturday 19th January
         Saturday 16th February
         Saturday 15th March

The next introductory astronomy course for members of the public will start on:

         Friday 25th January 2008 at 7.30pm

The new advanced astronomy course for members of the public to be given by MSAS will commence on:

         Friday 28th March 2008 at 7.30pm
