Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, a Grand Daughter University of University of Madras and the daughter University of Madurai Kamaraj University, was born in Septemer 9, 1990 and declared open by the present Chief Minister Dr.Kalaignar M.Karunanidhi at an illustrious function marking the grand occasion. The motto of the University is "Knowledge is Power". Named after the famous poet - litterateur Prof. Sundaram Pillai, the University has 26 University departments on various frontier areas of Arts, Languages, Sciences, Engineering and Technology and a strong network of 102 affiliated colleges spread over the three southern districts of Tamilnadu, namely, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Kanyakumari. It has a sprawling 520 acres main campus located at Abishekapatti, Tirunelveli where majority of the university departments function, an aesthetic 120 acres campus housing the prestigious Sri Parama Kalyani Centre for Environmental Sciences department at Alwarkurichi and a 70 acres beautiful campus at Rajakkamangalam housing the Centre for Marine Sciences and Technology. Many of these colleges have contributed significantly to the cause of higher education for many decades. There are five colleges, which are more than 100 years old.

Advanced studies are offered in various departments and faculties. Post graduate programmes in Chemistry, Communication, Commerce, Computer Science,Information Technology and Engineering, Criminology and Criminal Justice, Economics, English, Environmental studies, Geo-Technology, Geo-Physics, History, Mathematics, Management studies, Physics, Sociology and Statistics are being currently offered.Ph.D. programmes are offered in all departments.
A two year M.Tech. programme in Computer and Information Technology and a five-year Integrated M.Tech. programme in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT)are offered by Centre for Information Technology and Engineering department of the University in the main campus. Admission to the first year of the five year integrated M.Tech.ICT course is open to 10+2 (Math-Physics-Chemistry-Biology or Computer Science) group students and lateral entry into the second year admission is open to diploma holders under 10+3 system and B.Sc. graduates as per Government of Tamilnadu rules as follows:
Diploma Candidates: A pass with minimum eligibility marks in the Diploma Course of the State Board of Technical Education and Training, Tamil Nadu or Equivalent Diploma Courses prescribed for the Degree Courses.
B.Sc. Candidates: A pass with minimum eligibility marks in any recognized Bachelors Degree in Science of minimum 3 years duration with 10+2+3 pattern with Mathematics as one of the subjects at the Degree level. For further details contact: +91-462-2323650 +91-9443117397
The University has set up the centre for Environmental studies at Alwarkurichi in collaboration with a leading industrial house (Amalgamations). Eco-friendly ventures in aquaculture, fishing and agro inputs are encouraged. The centre has developed an organic manure, Mano compost. There is a Marine research Centre at Rajakkamangalam called Center for Marine Sciences and Technology.
