Manitoba Highway 59

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Provincial Trunk Highway 59 (PTH 59) is a provincial highway in the Canadian province of Manitoba. It runs from the U.S. border (where it meets with U.S. Highway 59) north to 8th St. in Victoria Beach on Lake Winnipeg.

The portion of Provincial Trunk Highway 59 within Winnipeg is also known as Route 20 or Lagimodiere Blvd.. PTH 59 is a 4-lane at-grade expressway through Winnipeg and north to the Brokenhead Ojibway Nation. North of the reserve, it becomes a two-lane highway. Then, a concurrency to PTH 12 begins, and ends near Grand Beach. From there, PTH 59 continues north, finally ending at Victoria Beach.

PTH 59 runs right through the east end of the City of Winnipeg, and is the main route to get from Winnipeg to Grand Beach. It is one of only two provincial highways (the other being PTH 1 - the Trans-Canada Highway) to cross Winnipeg on both ends, and is also the only crosstown highway on one road.

[edit] Route twinning

Proposals exist to twin the route southward to PTH 52 to maintain the needs of those travelling to and from Steinbach.
