[edit] History
MIT Manipal was established in 1957 as Manipal Engineering College, and renamed in 1974. It was founded by Dr. T.M.A. Pai, the founder of the town of Manipal and many of its present-day institutions. It was the first privately funded technical institute in India[citation needed].
Civil engineering was the first discipline to be offered at the institute, but by 1961, full undergraduate programs were also available in the areas of mechanical engineering and electrical engineering. The first in-campus hostels (dorms) were established in 1961 for students from outside the region. The college has steadily grown in size as well as scope since its inception. Today, it has the capability to house most of its students on the campus in its fifteen different hostel (dorm) buildings, and can be considered a fully residential campus.
The institute was originally affiliated to the Karnataka University in Dharwad. In 1965, the institute affiliated itself with the Mysore University in Mysore. More courses were added over the decades as the college expanded. In 1974, it was renamed and brought under the purview of Mangalore University, and this status would continue until the establishment of MAHE (now Manipal University) in the late 1990s. Since 2000, the college has been designated a deemed university, a status that allows it to operate autonomously without affiliations to larger universities and charge fees or capitation.
In 1993, the state government of Karnataka introduced statewide measures regulating the intake of students to private institutes, including MIT Manipal, and this had a tremendous financial impact on the college because it also meant that the fee structure was regulated by the government. The college was designated a Linguistic Minority Institute status between 1993 and 1999, which meant that a significant fraction of the intake was reserved for those students whose native tongue was Konkani.
The Dalai Lama visited the college in 1966.

Testing takes place annually in major cities across India. Admissions to the architecture program are based on a separate test.
International students follow different admission procedures and are subject to different fee structures.
Students may choose to enroll in the Twinning Program wherein the first two years of their coursework are undertaken at International Centre for Applied Sciences, Manipal and the remainder are completed at a college or university in the United States or Australia or UK. The eventual degree will be awarded by the foreign university.
