Manipal Institute of Communication (MIC) is an affiliate to Manipal's Manipal University (formerly known as MAHE) group of institutions. It is a college that provides undergraduate,postgraduate and doctorate degrees in media, communication and journalism. Started in 1997 with a postgraduate program, an undergraduate program was started in 2001, was in response to the phenomenal expansion of media,equipped with the latest communication technology, to train competent skilful professionals who are equally sensitive to social values.
The courses in MIC aim at providing students with high-level knowledge of the media and communication infrastructure in current industry in India, and to enable professionals entering into the field with favourable experience and expertise in their area of specialisation. The current, predominant emphasis is on print and broadcast media, with additional significance given to new media and the Internet. Students are expected to undergo mandatory internships in organisations in the field of choice and finish a degree with a porfolio of the work they have achieved.
The college is currently headed by the Director, Mr. Buroshiva Dasgupta, with notable journalist Mr. M. V. Kamath as the honorary director. Mr. Kamath has been an award-winning jounalist with decades of experience in print and broadcast media.
Situated close to Manipal's famed printing press, the college has a unique architectural style often studied by architecture students from the Manipal Institute of Technology. MIC is equipped with an impressive library and a top-level sound and video lab with some of the most modern software and equipment in the industry.
