Manhasset Secondary School is a four-year public high school and middle school located in Manhasset, at 200 Memorial Place, in Nassau County, New York on the North Shore of Long Island. Manhasset High School consistently ranks among the top 100 High Schools in America[citation needed].

At Manhasset, Jim Brown earned 13 letters playing football, baseball, basketball, lacrosse, while also running track.[2] Manhasset lacrosse has won the state lacrosse title twice, in 1995 and 2004.[citation needed]

As of the 2005-06 school year, the school had an enrollment of 785 students and 59.0 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student-teacher ratio of 13.3:1.[1]

  • Manhasset's team name is the Indians, and the school colors are orange and blue.
  • Popular varsity sports at Manhasset High School are lacrosse, football,basketball, baseball, cross country/track, wrestling, soccer, swimming, crew, golf, chugalug, and tennis. The following are some of the sport teams and their accomplishments.

  • Manhasset lacrosse is an enduring tradition.[3]
  • In 1932, Manhasset established the first HS lacrosse team on Long Island while Garden City followed shortly after in 1934.[4] A yearly lacrosse tradition known as the "Woodstick Classic" emerged between the schools, an event which is attended by thousands every year, and is currently the nation's longest continuous boys lacrosse rivalry.[5] Manhasset leads the all-time series, 64-50.[6] In recent years, a side rivalry has developed with the Cold Spring Harbor Seahawks.
  • Manhasset has been two time NY State lacrosse champions, winning the state title in 1995,[3] and in 2004.[citation needed]

  • The Manhasset High School girls cross country team won the Nassau County conference championship for the second consecutive year in 2005.
  • The Manhasset Boys Outdoor Track & Field team has only five losses in at least 20 years, with an undefeated record until 2005[citation needed]
  • The Manhasset Boys 2003 Cross-Country team won the Class B County Championships, competing in the State Meet in Syracuse, New York.
  • Outdoor Track Coach Donald Scott ranks 6th all-time amongst all New York State coaches in Track dual meet victories, recording 384 over the span of his coaching career. [1]

  • Manhasset Wrestling has won the Division II County Championship three years in a row, in 2005, 2006, and 2007. Entered division 1 in 2008.

  • The Manhasset 2000 Boys Soccer team finished third in the New York State Tournament.

  • The 2006-2007 Manhasset baseball team recorded the most wins over a two year span in school history.
  • The 2007 Manhasset Indians advanced to the 2nd round of a playoff for the first time in school history.
  • The 2007 Manhasset Indians went to the playoffs back to back seasons for the first time in 20 years.

In 2007 Manhasset's Choirs (Concert Choir, Kinsmen, & Select Ensemble) became the first in New York State to receive three Golds with Distinction on the highest level of NYSSMA.[citation needed] In 2008 this process was repeated, and with the Women's Chorus receiving a Gold with Distinction.

[edit] Gun Threat

On May 29, 2008, an unnamed 8th grader reported seeing a high school student carrying a firearm on the way to the boys restroom. The student quickly reported it to the teacher who then reported it to the principal. The school was set into immediate lockdown during 2nd period. The lockdown continued until 7th period, when students were allowed to eat at the Middle/High school Cafeteria. After finishing their lunches, students were evacuated to the school gymnasium where they stayed until 3:08, when students were released from the school.[10]
