Dr. Madeline 'Mandy' Hampton is a fictional character played by Moira Kelly on the television serial drama The West Wing. She was White House media consultant during the first season of the show.
Former girlfriend of Josh Lyman, Mandy was a media consultant during the Bartlet campaign for the presidency, and was brought to the White House late in the first year of Bartlet's presidency (the first season of the show) in a similar capacity after several public relations gaffes by administration staff. Hampton stated in the second episode that she has a bachelor's degree in art history, a master's degree in communications and a doctorate in political science.
The character left the show without plot explanation after the first season. Show creator Aaron Sorkin mentioned in an official The West Wing book that her character "wasn't working" and that her departure, which was decided on well before Season 1 finished up production, was amicable.[citation needed] Sorkin originally said that Mandy's whereabouts would be revealed in Season 2 but this never came about.[citation needed]
Her main story of departure came when a memo Mandy had written while working for a top challenger to President Bartlet was leaked, embarrassing the Administration. Fans of The West Wing have since adopted the phrase "Mandyville" to represent the fate of other recurring characters who appeared in fairly integral roles for several episodes but then suddenly disappeared.[citation needed]
