Mandi Gobindgarh is a city and a municipal council in Fatehgarh Sahib district in the Indian state of Punjab. It is also sometimes referred as Steel City (or Simply Loha Mandi) because of large number of steel mills and factories.

When Guru Hargobind visited this area along with his army, he had a tough fight with Lala Beg, the army chief of Phul Maharaj the ruler of this region. Lala was killed in the village of Saunti near Amloh. Soldiers killed during the war were brought to Gurdwara 6th patshahi and cremated.
[edit] Walled Town with four gates
One was near Modi Mills, the other was near Munilal Om Prakash. While the third near the present main post office and the fourth near Krishna Mandir. All these gates used to be closed by sunset till 1950. After 1950, the gates were demolished one by one.
[edit] Along the Path of Progress
The first business started here was of cotton ginning. It was also famous for its gram trade as the Maharaja had declared it as the free trade zone in the region. The first rolling mills was M/s Jaimal Singh Sant Ram Iron & Steel Rooling Mills which started in 1938, now known as M/s Ganga Ram Iron and Steel. Utensils like enamel plated plates, mugs were also manufactured in Gobindgarh. The first school was a co-educational primary school situated at the present municipal market. It was a part of SNAS Higher Secondary School. The building was pulled down in 1965-66.
The first medical practitioner at Gobindgarh were Dr.Harjit Singh. Dr.Harnam Singh Chopra joined the dispensary as a qualified doctor in 1949. Modern amenities like Telephones, electricity and water supplies made their first appearance in Gobindgarh during 1955-57.

As of 2001 India census,[1] Gobindgarh had a population of 155,416. Males constitute 56% of the population and females 44%. Gobindgarh has an average literacy rate of 69%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 72%, and female literacy is 67%. In Gobindgarh, 12% of the population is under 6 years of age.
Mandi Gobingarh is a synonym of the iron industry. Rolling mills scattered on either side of the Grand Trunk Road the people here and that is why the town is known as "steel town". The town was founded by the Maharaja of Nabha in 1902 and it was known as Nabha Gate as there was an approach road from the Grand Trunk Road to Nabha.

There are many beautiful public parks in Mandi Gobindgarh viz. Rose Garden, Green Park and most famous Ladies'Park exclusively for Ladies. Most of the Banks are present in Mandi Gobindgarh.

It is 50 km from Ludhiana on one side and 60 km from Chandigarh on another side. It also has the famous "Floating Restaurant" built on BBMB Canal.
