[edit] History

In 1914, three schools consolidated to form Elkhardt School, with had a faculty of four, including the principal. In 1916, the first public transportation to the school was provided by horse-drawn wagon. The name was changed to Manchester District High School in 1924, with the first graduating class, in 1925, consisting of eight students. Rapid population growth, following World War II, required that new facilities be built, and in the fall of 1964 the school was moved to 7401 Hull Street Road. Westward urban sprawl, from the nearby city of Richmond, Virginia, required yet another move in 1992 to the current location at 12601 Bailey Bridge Road.

From its humble beginnings, Manchester has grown into a modern institution that currently serves over 2000 students. In addition to its outstanding academic programs, the school also offers over fifty extra-curricular activities including clubs, performing arts groups, publications, and athletic teams.

[edit] Campus

Manchester shares many of its facilities with the adjacent Bailey Bridge Middle School. It is home to Lloyd Swelnis Stadium, named after the long-time Manchester athletic director. The school is also home to Chesterfield County's center for mentally handicapped students. In 2003 closed-circuit cameras were installed in the building and parking lots to provide better security for students and staff. An addition to the main building was completed in 2004 to house the new Mass Communications and Spanish-Immersion Specialty Center.

[edit] Students

Manchester High School has a diverse student body, reflective of the multi-ethnicity of Chesterfield County. The opening of Cosby High School in 2006 has alleviated the recent over-crowding at Manchester High, allowing for the removal of trailers previously used as classrooms.

[edit] Faculty

The current staff consists of 175 teachers, lead by principal Pete Koste. Assistant principals include Mr. Don Gallier, Dr. Louis Milhouse, Mrs. Diane O'Connor. Deans of Students are Ms. Pamela Lundy, Ms. Laura Hebert, and Mrs. Christy Ellis.

[edit] Activities

Sports teams include baseball, basketball, football, volleyball, soccer, softball, field hockey, track and field, cross-country, tennis, wrestling, and golf. Notable clubs include a JROTC program, Foreign Language clubs, a Model UN, choir, marching band, and cheering.

The 1999-2000 school year became the most successful season for boys basketball in the school's history. Coached by Chip McCoull, the varsity team posted a school record 24 victories with only 2 defeats, being ranked #2 in the AAA group AAA by the Associated Press. The school captured the Insync Holiday Tournament (now the Times-Dispatch Invitational Tournament, TDIT), Dominion District Regular Season and Dominion District Tournament Titles, before falling to Varina High School 71-69, in the Central Region Semifinal. The team was lead by Domonic Jones and Armard Ross. Jones, an all-state selection (2000), tied Bob Bundy as the school's all-time leading scorer during his career as a Lancer.

From 1996-2000, the boys basketball varsity team posted a record of 65-18, but never advanced to AAA State Tournament.

In 2006, the MHS Gamers club placed 2nd and 3rd at the 2006 Radford University Programming Competition. They hosted GPX 2006 on May 25th 2006. In 2007, the Club placed 1st in both the game programming and general programming contests. GPX 2007 was held during the end of May.

In 2007, the Manchester Boys Cross Country team finished its season as the District Seasonal Champions with a record of 8-0 (meets and invitationals not affecting the season are not accounted for.) The team beat their nationally ranked rivals, Midlothian High School, on the Midlo course during the regular season, but fell to them at the district meet on October 25, placing second in the district.

On April 25, 2008, the Manchester Lancer JROTC Battalion received the Honor Unit with Distinction status for the tenth year in a row.
