[edit] Plot Summary

Devayani (Suchitra Sen) is a girl from a poor family who meets and falls in love with Mohnish (Ashok Kumar) who hails from an extremely wealthy family. Mohnish leaves to gain a higher education abroad, and the couple plan to marry after his return. During his absence, things fall apart financially for Devayani's father, who resultantly suffers a stroke. Devayani approaches Mohnish's family for assistance, but is rebuffed with a vehemence which leaves no one in doubt that marrying Mohnish is no longer on the cards for Devayani. On his death-bed, and anxious to see her respectably settled before he dies, Devayani's distraught father arranges for her to marry Rakhal, a much older man.

The cure proves worse than the disease; Rakhal proves to be a drunkard and womaniser who frequents houses of ill repute and frequently beats his wife for good measure. By this man, Devayani becomes pregnant and is delivered of a daughter. She resolves to ensure that her daughter grows up far from Rakhal's reach. What does she do next? How does she support herself? Does Mohnish eventually return to his beloved? What does he find? These questions engage the viewer in the latter half of the film.
