This article is fundamentally flawed. Based on false notions of what a Malay is. See discussion at Malays with which this article should be merged with anyway. Merbabu 15:03, 16 January 2007 (UTC)

It may be a flawed concept but the article is historically culturally accurate. I disagree to a merge. __earth (Talk) 15:51, 29 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Nusantara

Nusantara redirects here. Why not change the title to Nusantara? Personally, i have never come across the term "Malay world". Furthermore, "Malay world" gets 79,200 hits in google, while Nusantara gets 4,830,000 hits. Plus, most pages that links here are redirected from Nusantara. And, 'Nusantara' is mentioned 17 times in the article. kawaputratorque 17:04, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

Ok. I will move the page soon if there is no objection soon. kawaputratorque 09:36, 22 September 2007 (UTC)

Hang on. I will get further comment. --Merbabu 09:39, 22 September 2007 (UTC)

"Malay world" gets 69,300 English-language google hits; "Nusantara" gets 461,000. However, looking at them, the ones for "Malay world" seem far more relevant; the Nusantara ones are frequently in company names and so forth. Looking at the book search, which would probably exclude such items, "Malay world" gets 615, while "Nusantara" gets 2310. Many of these are in Indonesian, though (I don't see how to choose a language here). So, on balance, I'd say the test is rather equivocal, although it certainly establishes the currency of both terms in English usage. Rigadoun (talk) 18:58, 24 September 2007 (UTC)

One has to be careful in the comparison. We should compare English vs. English instead of English+Malay vs English. Nusantara is used extensively in Malay but not in English. The word "Malay World" on the other hand can't be found in the Malay language. __earth (Talk) 04:48, 25 September 2007 (UTC)
My view is that each term has separate meanings and histories and they therefore should have separate articles. Nusantara comes from Majapahit while Malay world is a modern term which may have been coined by Malay writers (as dunia melayu) in the 19th century. (Caniago 00:27, 26 September 2007 (UTC))
It is important if there is the slightest difference detected - to keep separate articles and no title changing or redirects - specially with terminology such as this which carries more connotations than an average encyclopedia article can hope to explain SatuSuro 03:04, 26 September 2007 (UTC)

Ok. So i guess we create two separate article? This article is clearly talking about Nusantara. Seems like 'Malay world' isnt necessarily the English meaning of 'Nusantara'. kawaputratorque 15:20, 2 October 2007 (UTC)

Malay world....? Nusantara is Majapahit origin geopolitical concept, later adapted by modern Indonesia to identify their archipelago. On the other hand, Malay world (dunia Melayu) didn't fit neatly to be considered as identical to Nusantara. Moreover the concept of "Malay" identity in Indonesia and Malaysia is quite different. Malaysia, in contrast of significant influx and racial difference (also tensions) with Chinese and Indian immigrant, always suggested the term Malay in racial senses. While in Indonesia, Malay (suku Melayu) considered as just one of many Indonesian ethnicities (suku), often only valid to identify coastal Malay of Sumatra, Borneo, and ofcourse Malay of Malay peninsula. Other ethnicities such as Javanese, Sundanese, Balinese, Minangkabau, and Batak, rarely identify themself as "suku Melayu". I say we must separate this two concept in separate article. [edit] Unknown to Filipinos

"In the Philippines, the term Dunia Melayu Nusantara is used..." I think this information is wrong. Actually, If you say this word in the Philippines, nobody has idea what your talking about. Because Tagalog or Basa Filipino and other Philippine dialects are slightly far from Bahasa Melayu. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 210.213.238.60 (talk) 07:26, 11 March 2008 (UTC)
