Maltese American

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Maltese Americans are citizens of the United States who are of Maltese ancestry.

[edit] History

The first Maltese in America came to New Orleans, Louisiana, where they were confused with Italians. In some cases they even had "Born Malta, Italy" on their tombstones. After World War I, Maltese immigration to the US increased with Detroit, Michigan, and the automobile industry, drawing a large share of the immigrants. A significant percentage of the Maltese immigrants had intended to stay only temporarily for work, but many settled in the US permanently, In addition to Detroit, other cities like New York City, Los Angeles (a Maltese community thrives in San Pedro and Long Beach) and San Francisco, California, became homes to Maltese immigrants. The Maltese, as in their home country, are predominately Roman Catholic.[1]
