Malone

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Malone (Ó Maoileoin) is a family name originating in Ireland. The Irish Malone Family is an ancient sept, known in Irish as Ó Maoil Eoin (Ó Maoileoin/O'Maoileoin), meaning descendant of a servant or devotee of Saint John, maol being Irish for bald and referring to the distinctive hairstyle sported by the Irish monks. The sept has certainly lived up to its name, in maintaining close associations with the ecclesiastical orders, producing many Bishops and Abbots, in particular, its connection with the Abbey of Clonmacnois. The anglicised version of the surname is rarely seen today with its prefix O'.

Also a branch of the Muldoon clan had its name translated in English to Malone because of the similarity of Maoileoin (Malone) and Maoldoin (Muldoon). Most of this branch can be found in Sligo and Clare.

Family Motto: Fidelis ad Urnam - Faithful to the Tomb
